Stringybark Creek

The site of the infamous ambush by a group of men later known as the “Kelly Gang”, is an easy drive from Benalla.   It was here that Ned Kelly committed the crime for which he was to be hanged – the murder of Constable Lonigan.   During the ambush Sergeant Kennedy and Constable Scanlan were also killed.   Constable McIntyre was the only one to escape.   The men were declared outlaws and eventually hunted down at the seige at Glenrowan.   Kelly was the only one to survive.    He was charged with the murder of Constable Lonigan and hanged at the old Melbourne Gaol in November 1880.

Visitors can wander around the site and enjoy the peaceful bush setting whilst reflecting on what  occurred here over 100 years ago.
